William Thomas (Gwilym Marles) – great uncle of Dylan Thomas 'There is a memorial plaque
to Gwilym Marles/William Thomas; 1834 – 79) at Myfyrgell. As a Unitarian
minister, poet and Radical writer, he kept a school in the town for the
last twenty years of his life. It was in honour of Gwilym Marles, his father’s
uncle, that Dylan Thomas (1914-53) was given his second name, Marlais. Some
have seen in the effusions of the Reverend Eli Jenkins, in Under Milk Wood
(1954) a pastiche of Gwilym Marles'. More information is
available at the house. |
