William Thomas (Gwilym Marles)

– great uncle of Dylan Thomas

The Garden Studio is part of the house 'Myfyrgell' on Seion Hill in Llandysul. Myfyrg
ell is Welsh for 'Place of study'.

'There is a memorial plaque to Gwilym Marles/William Thomas; 1834 – 79) at Myfyrgell. As a Unitarian minister, poet and Radical writer, he kept a school in the town for the last twenty years of his life. It was in honour of Gwilym Marles, his father’s uncle, that Dylan Thomas (1914-53) was given his second name, Marlais. Some have seen in the effusions of the Reverend Eli Jenkins, in Under Milk Wood (1954) a pastiche of Gwilym Marles'.

(Quotation from 'The Literary Pilgrim in Wales', Meic Stephens, Gwasg Carreg Gwalch press, 2000).
